In this article, The AFIT Foundation is recognizing Dr. Jeff Butler (Brig Gen [Ret]), Retired Air Force Veteran and former Chair of Engineering Programs and Head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the United States Air Force Academy!

Dr. Butler graduated in 1998 from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology with a PhD in Computer Engineering. He grew up as an Army brat and decided to join the military due to the camaraderie and purpose it offered. Dr. Butler is now retired from the military but continues to teach computer science and cybersecurity courses. He also works with the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Chapel and local chapter of the Officer’s Christian Fellowship. He volunteers with the Chapel to cook breakfast once a month for Airmen and Guardians in the Dorms and participates in outreach ministries for the base and local communities.

Dr. Butler fondly remembers the time he found out that AFIT was not going to be closed in the middle of his dissertation program. AFIT has had a profound impact on his life through the many meaningful and enduring relationships he built during his time as a student, faculty member, and alumnus. Dr. Butler received an exceptional education at AFIT, but the friendships and people meant much more to him.

Dr. Butler’s advice to those who are entering the military is to do your research and learn Colin Powell’s 13 rules for leadership… “Optimism is a force multiplier!” Thank you, Dr. Butler!
