In this article, The AFIT Foundation is recognizing Mr. Bruce Morlan, former mathematician analyst for the Strategic Air Command.

Mr. Morlan received his MS in Operations Research from the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology in 1979. He initially joined the military because the Air Force offered a ROTC scholarship. He continued to serve as he pursued an exciting career path through applied mathematics. Mr. Morlan is a twice retired mathematician – first from the United States Air Force in 1973 and then from the Mayo Clinic in 2014. He now serves an oath to defend the Constitution by being active in Braver Angels as a conservative voice. He is also involved in the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, where he works with a bi-partisan group seeking to reduce the effects of climate change.

AFIT gave Mr. Morlan the boost he needed to realize that he could be a good researcher and communicator on complex issues. Since his time at AFIT, he has used his skills to help others deal with complex problems. A moment Mr. Morlan fondly remembers was when his advisor helped him get funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). At the time it was what he needed to get support for his thesis, and it eventually opened many doors for him that he still appreciates today.

Mr. Morlan advises those who are entering the military to embrace the idea that your life and career are dedicated to serving your family and nation, and to enjoy the opportunities that present themselves on that journey. Thank you, Mr. Morlan!
